Emotions Were Running Very High on This Week's Dancing with the Stars

After a week without eliminations, there's no Disney magic to save our remaining nine dancers on Dancing with the Stars. In fact, it's the week where we finally "separate the contenders from the pretenders," according to Erin Andrews. We're in Week 6 -- this is the time where the people who are getting it start pulling away from the people who just ... really aren't.

Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber
Quickstep / "Take on Me" by a-ha
Well, pop star Ally Brooke may not have been born in the '80s, but that doesn't mean she can't tackle an '80s-inspired dance. (For those wondering, she was born in 1993.) A typically strong critic of the quickstep, Len only has good things to say. "First out, first class," he says to sum it up. And he even goes to battle with Bruno and Carrie Ann when they say there were moments when they were out of sync. Good thing this is on tape so they can figure out who's right.

Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov
Viennese Waltz / "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston
Have you heard of the fleckerl? It's apparently a step in the Viennese Waltz that Len doesn't see enough, but Kate and Pasha brought it out Monday night. All three judges were fans, so much so that they gave them all 9s. Carrie Ann says it's clear how Kate is putting in the work to learn this and it's paying off. And not only that, she did all those spins this week while suffering from vertigo. Fleckerl, that.

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson
Quickstep / "Part Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder
Whether you call it a "tiny mess up" like Carrie Ann, a "major incident" like Len, or a "little misunderstanding" like Bruno, you can't deny that there were some missteps in this quickstep. Witney owns up to it, saying that she tripped on her dress and caused it, but as Len's confusing jockey-on-a-horse analogy illustrates, they're a team and get one score. Bruno thinks that this week has shown that Kel is a "full-time dancer," and hopefully America agrees.

Karamo Brown and Jenna Johnson
Contemporary / "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi
Last week Karamo danced for his kids, and this week he danced for his dad, who he has only recently reconnected with after coming out to him as a teen. It was a moving contemporary dance that evoked emotion and brought out his best performance yet. Len called it fluid, Bruno says it's clear he left all self-doubt behind, and Carrie Ann says all she sees is love, compassion, and connection. Karamo didn't want to cry two weeks in a row -- and neither did I, but here we are!

Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten
Samba / "Southbound" by Carrie Underwood
This dance receives a 10 out of 10 for best shirt-ripping-open action (thanks, Alan!). As for Hannah's dancing, it's good! She's definitely improving week-to-week. Bruno points out that she is occasionally off the rhythm, which Carrie agrees with -- but she thinks it's because they were trying to dance a Samba to a country song. And that is not what God or Carrie Underwood intended.

Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Val Chmerkovskiy
Jive / "Wake Me Up Before You Go" by Wham!
It must be weird to be the daughter of a supermodel--and even weirder to be shy when you're forced to be in the spotlight like that. In order to help Sailor get over her stage fright, Val takes her to the streets (aka Hollywood Boulevard) to help her loosen up. And it works! All three judges say this was the performance they've been waiting to see from her -- and their scores reflect that.

Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold
Viennese Waltz / "Somebody to Love" by Queen
Dancing to "Somebody to Love," Sean was supposed to be performing a romantic dance dedicated to his wife. Let's just say, I'm sure his wife loved it... And let me also just say, he's lucky he's with Lindsay, who makes him look quite good despite the fact he doesn't move very much. Len points out that dancing doesn't come easy to him, but he does give it his all. And that's all one can ask, right?

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater
Samba / "Light It Up" by Major Lazer
Bruno says that the samba is the hardest dance -- for anyone. Based on James' previous problems, Emma decides to tie shoestrings to his belt loops and control his hips during practice. To my unprofessionally trained eyes, the shoestring trick works! He is really feeling himself and getting into the Samba. And the judges agree! "I think I like it," Bruno says while leering at the camera. Carrie Ann can barely stop giggling long enough to give him notes. And Len wraps it up by saying, "tooty fruity what a booty." That's it. That's the critique.

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko
Contemporary / "The Other Side" by Lauren Alaina
Not only is Lauren dancing to her own song this week, but she's also doing it on a very personal day. She wrote "The Other Side" about her stepdad, Sam, who died of cancer one year ago. Gleb created a contemporary dance that is a love note to him. If you were able to see through your tears, you'd have seen it was a beautiful, emotional performance. Lauren is visibly shaken throughout and sobs through the judge's critiques. Luckily, they have nothing but the best to say.

After combining America's votes as well as scores from this week and last, we are given the week's bottom two: Sailor and Val and Ally and Sasha. Both young women are in tears at the news. Carrie Ann chooses to save Ally -- and Bruno does the same. That means that Sailor Brinkley-Cook, who filled in for her mother just three days before the season started, is sent home. Someone go give that girl a hug!
